About this tool
This map displays NJDEP Landscape Project 3.3 wildlife habitat for the state of New Jersey. Landscape regions are displayed at low zoom levels and detailed wildlife habitat areas are shown at high zoom levels. Read more about the story of this tool on the Azavea blog.
To use this tool, zoom to an area by typing an address into the search bar or by selecting a featured location. Then, draw a custom shape to get a list of wildlife habitat within the area of interest.
Mapping for environmental impact
Through the creation of this tool we investigated a workflow to process a large dataset of about 1 million polygons into vector tiles that can be rendered responsively in a web browser.

Future possibilities
This tool solves a specific set of problems - it’s an example of what’s possible if we apply the methods used in this project workflow to a similar need.
If you’re a landowner in New Jersey, visit the US Fish and Wildlife Service Field Office website to learn about what you can do to protect or enhance habitat on your property. Similar to much of our work, the source code is available under an open source license. Leverage the data processing pipeline on similar source data and let us know how it goes!
Does your team work on repetitive processes like environmental inventories? If you would like to hear more about how we can help you build a tool that maximizes efficiency and accuracy, contact us.
